HTC VIVE for Business: Focus Vision, Focus 3 and XR Elite Compared

Why HTC VIVE is on every enterprise shortlist

HTC has built VR hardware since the original VIVE in 2016 and has a long history in professional simulation: SteamVR base stations and VIVE Trackers are still standard in many training simulators, and HTC sells business editions of its standalone headsets through its VIVE Business programme. With Meta no longer selling commercial Quest SKUs since February 2026, HTC VIVE and PICO are the two brands most companies compare when they want a headset that is sold and supported for business use. For the wider market overview, see my VR glasses for business guide.

The current HTC VIVE line-up for business

  • VIVE Focus Vision (announced September 2024): HTC's current flagship. A standalone headset that can also run PC VR through a DisplayPort mode. The model to plan new projects with.
  • VIVE Focus 3: the previous standalone business headset, widely deployed in training. Same display resolution class as Focus Vision, without built-in eye tracking and DisplayPort mode.
  • VIVE XR Elite: a compact, lighter mixed reality headset with 1920 × 1920 pixels per eye. Good for demos and shorter sessions where weight matters.
  • VIVE Pro 2 and VIVE Trackers: PC-tethered VR with external base stations. Still common in fixed simulators where real props such as tools, hoses or steering wheels are tracked.

VIVE Focus Vision: key specifications

  • Chipset and memory: Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 with 12 GB RAM and 128 GB storage.
  • Displays: 2448 × 2448 pixels per eye (5K combined), up to 120° field of view, 90 Hz.
  • Eye tracking: built in, with two eye-tracking cameras. Useful for foveated rendering, attention analysis in training and natural interaction.
  • PC VR: a DisplayPort mode for lossless PC VR, plus wireless streaming with VIVE Business Streaming.
  • Battery: a hot-swappable rear battery, which suits long sessions and shift work.

Business Edition vs. consumer edition

VIVE Focus Vision is sold in a consumer and a Business Edition. The Business Edition costs more and is bought through HTC's business channel and resellers. HTC's business store lists it with a two-year VIVE Business warranty and services. In practice, the Business Edition is what you want when headsets are owned by the company, managed centrally with VIVE Business Device Management or a third-party MDM, and used by many people.

Prices vary by region and bundle. Check current business pricing with HTC or a reseller, and include accessories, spare batteries, hygiene covers and device management licences in the total budget.

VIVE Focus Vision vs. Quest 3 and PICO 4 Ultra Enterprise

  • Display: Focus Vision has the highest per-eye resolution of the three (2448 × 2448), which helps with small text, instruments and CAD detail.
  • Eye tracking: built into Focus Vision; not available on Quest 3 or PICO 4 Ultra Enterprise.
  • Chip: Quest 3 and PICO 4 Ultra Enterprise use the newer XR2 Gen 2, so very heavy standalone scenes can run better there. For demanding content, Focus Vision's PC VR mode is the answer.
  • Business channel: HTC and PICO sell business editions with their own management tools. Quest 3 is consumer-only since February 2026.
  • Comfort and logistics: the swappable battery of Focus Vision is a real advantage for full-day training.

Where HTC VIVE is used

  • Simulation with real props: HTC is a hardware partner of the firefighter simulator FLAIM Trainer, which combines VR with a heat suit and physical equipment. VIVE Trackers make tools, nozzles or weapons replicas visible in VR.
  • Industrial and safety training: procedure training, forklift and crane operation, onboarding, as covered in my VR safety training guide.
  • Defence and public safety: HTC publishes VR army training stories on its business site. An overview of what different organisations use is in VR headsets for military, fire services and industry.
  • Design review and sales: high resolution plus PC VR mode for detailed engineering models.

Developing VIVE apps with Unity

  • OpenXR: HTC supports OpenXR through its VIVE OpenXR plugin for Unity, alongside the older VIVE Wave SDK. Building on OpenXR and the XR Interaction Toolkit keeps the project portable to PICO, Quest and Android XR.
  • Standalone and PC from one project: the same Unity application can be built as a standalone Android app for daily training and as a PC build for a high-fidelity simulator station.
  • Eye tracking and trackers: eye gaze and tracked props are accessed through OpenXR extensions, which is where an experienced developer saves time.
  • 3D preparation: CAD data has to be optimised for 90 frames per second on standalone hardware.

The full process is described in how a custom VR training simulation is built.

Timeline and investment

A validation sprint with one scenario on your VIVE headsets starts from EUR 9,500. A complete production application typically ranges from EUR 25,000 to 90,000, depending on scenarios, 3D preparation, tracked props, languages and integrations. Multi-site or enterprise programmes start from EUR 60,000. See How much does a Unity developer cost in 2026?.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HTC VIVE Focus Vision good for business?

Yes. It offers 2448 x 2448 pixels per eye, up to 120 degrees field of view, built-in eye tracking, a hot-swappable battery and a DisplayPort mode for PC VR. The Business Edition is sold through HTC's business channel with VIVE Business warranty and services.

What is the difference between VIVE Focus Vision and VIVE Focus 3?

Both have 2448 x 2448 pixels per eye. Focus Vision adds built-in eye tracking, colour passthrough cameras and a DisplayPort mode for lossless PC VR, so it is the better choice for new projects.

HTC VIVE Focus Vision or Meta Quest 3 for training?

Focus Vision has higher resolution, eye tracking, a swappable battery and a business edition. Quest 3 has the newer XR2 Gen 2 chip but is sold only as a consumer device since February 2026. With Unity and OpenXR, the same training can run on both.

Which HTC headset is used for firefighter training?

HTC is a hardware partner of FLAIM Trainer, a firefighter VR simulator that combines a VR headset with a heat suit and physical equipment. Tracked props are often implemented with VIVE Trackers.

Can Unity apps run on HTC VIVE headsets?

Yes. Unity supports HTC VIVE through OpenXR and the VIVE OpenXR plugin. One Unity project can target VIVE standalone, VIVE PC VR, PICO and Meta Quest.
